If your character dies, you can respawn for free at your home camp, or respawn on spot by spending crystals. After respawning you might want to pick up items you dropped due to dying.
The best way to avoid dying is to get stronger by crafting and upgrading your weapons, level up your talents and skills, and recruit stronger companions. Don’t forget to bring some potions with you, a quick boost from them might get you a long way.
